Coconut milk, Two nights of bacon and a late night walk.

So yesterday (Monday) was day one of my mission to eat better for my thryoid (and all over) health. Well I didnt do very well, I skipped breakfast, I drank some soda. Didnt feel like eating any lunch but I had a balanced dinner. Pan seared chicken rolls with avocado, spinach, tomato, a slice of cheese and.....bacon. Not so good - but to be fair, I had bought the bacon before I read that those with thyroid diseases are more likely to have cholesterol problems.

Today (Tuesday) was much better. I began with a bowl of oatmeal and prunes made with coconut milk by Silk. ( 0 Cholesterol and double Calcium!) Sounds strange but I love how the coconut milk or even the almond milks give a great flavor to things. For Lunch we hade pancakes and fruit - I should have used whole grain flour in hindsight but never mind. Then for dinner we had chicken rolls again only this time we had sauteed mushrooms instead of tomato - I had to use up the rolls before they went stale!

Tomorrow is fish night, hopefully I can redeem myself from eating the bacon...two nights in row!

Took my eldest son to the library and checked out some books on Thyroid health, low fat and low cholesterol meals, and also a couple books about 'Clean' eating. Not too sure what they are about but the pictures looked good. I think it will be recipes to eat more whole foods without additives. SCORE!

As far as household chemicals, (endocrine disruptors) I have yet to use up all of the laundry detergent we already have or the dish soap. Once those are used up its natural soaps from now on...especially after reading an artical about Triclosan in this months Martha Stewart Whole Living. Isnt it ironic how when you need help or infomation, things get thrown your way? Well, sometimes. I have a subscription to the magazine and just as I start to research things that could mess with my thyroid, I open the magazine to find a section devoted to thyroid health.

My hormones must be peaking these last couple of night because this Insomnia lark is a pain in the rump, so I took our dog out for an impromptu walk - which he appreciated - and now I feel a little more able to wind down. Lets see...

Guilty Pleasures.

Today (saturday) we went to city nearest us, about 100 miles away, and while out we ate at Logans...oh how I enjoyed steak and lobster tail with sweet potato fries and mushrooms. Hey at least the lobster and mushrooms have Selenium, lobster also has zinc, steak has Iron, and sweet potato has vitamin A, all good for thyroid function. I almost went for the coleslaw but remember...cruciferous veges negatively affect the thyroid when it is in the Hyper state! It just goes to show that even when trying to control what you eat for wellness, you can still eat to support your thyroid health while out and about.

Tomorrow, I will plan some Thyroid happy meals for the week that my husband and boys will like too. My youngest has just started on solid foods so he will likely stick with his cereal and a fruit or a new vegetable. My older baby eats anything so I should be able to plan some family friendly meals.

Natural Living - Phasing out processed foods and chemical products.: Goals.

Natural Living - Phasing out processed foods and chemical products.: Goals.: I propose a one year detox process to phase out processed foods (with the exception of the odd restraunt meal with my family) and non-essent...

Preperation for more Natural Living.

So we went to eat at a chinese place with some friends tonight, probably not at all good for wellness but I have 2 more days before my detox. I also ate 2 chocolate cupcakes today. Oh how I will miss cake. I will have to find more yummy recipes using whole grain flour and good quality dark chocolate. I am finindg myself less tolerant of alcohol with this illness, I just tried to drink 8floz of a Lime-Beer drink and I can feel it and I think it will be very easy to abstain from alcoholic drinks...I'll stick with my fresh lemonade I made up in a pitcher.

An interesting thing I read today is that a chemical in stain resistant sofas and non stick pans make people twice as likely to have thyroid diseases (http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/jan/21/sofas-carpets-pans-thyroid-disease) Good thing we have leather seating. I do use non stick pans but have been wanting a cast iron skillet for so long this might be the final push!

In my persuit of trying to eliminate chemicals, such as Triclosan found in antibacterial soaps which has been linked with Thyroid disruption (http://www.wellnessresources.com/weight/articles/thyroid-disrupting_triclosan_jumps_into_the_frying_pan/), I love to use products by BabyGanics. I am not being payed to advertise but I know lots of parents want to use more natural product around thier children and I love these products as they really do work, and they can be bought as a package deal. I also make soap the old fashioned way using fats and Lye, I started making soaps for gifting but now I have a Thyroid disease I am going to start making them as an essential commodity and use them in making my own laundry detergent. There are lots of web pages with soap recipes out there but my adivce is make sure you get them from an official source as Lye can be dangerous and if the recipe is a home expericment recipe the quantities may not be right and you may end up with caustic soap.
Not Fun. As an example of one of the many great soap recipe resources, http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com/recipe/recipe.asp?recipe_id=224. I like to go to my local library and get books though as believe it or not I dont like to work recipes from the computer, I like to have a book.
Ok well thats me done bombarding my new blog for today. Tomorrow, I will create a list of all the things I like to eat that I will have to ration. :(

Thyroid Health - Links to usefull sites.

There are so many usefull webpages, but here a few that I found particulary informative. I do not own these pages, I am simply sharing the links that are easily found by searching "Hashitoxicosis" or "Eating for Thyroid Disorders" on a search engine. I am not a medic, just well-informed and these pages I found have great infomation.

Goals.

I propose a one year detox process to phase out processed foods (with the exception of the odd restraunt meal with my family) and non-essential chemical products in our home. I have recently been diagnosed with Hashitoxicosis, a Thyroid disease, and my reasearch for natural wellness has led me to the goal of only eating foods in thier natural states as found in nature and no refined foods. I will cook foods, and still eat sweet things but will bake whatever I want to have as a treat and use honey for sweetner and whole grain flour.
I already use many natural cleaners in my home, but since reading that certain chemicals can aggravate or even promote a Thyroid disease, I am opting to phase out all non-essential chemicals. I aim to only continue using a particular toilet cleaner that is the only prouduct I have found to get rid of the hard water deposits (that reoccur every week!).
I grow a small vegetable garden and do so organically, and my friend and I have canning days and can our produce or when we can buy bulk organic produce at a good price. I breastfeed my 4.5month old son.so eliminating as many farming based chemicals from my diet is important as they can accumulate in breast milk.
We have two sons, 4.5 months and 21month, I aim to try to by green and BPA free toys whenever possible.
Date to begin a detox for a Happy Thyroid - May 21st 2012

Here it goes!
